Sometimes these can be anticipated, at other times we find ourselves sadly having to make arrangements for a funeral when this sort of thing was furthest from our minds.
We hope the information here will be helpful if you find yourself having to arrange a funeral of a loved one.
Eligibility
Anyone is entitled to a funeral service in any of our 14 parishes provided they live in one of our team parishes, have died in one of these parishes or are on the Church Electoral Rollof one of the team parishes.
Burial and Interment of Cremated Remains
For families wishing burial or interment in one of our churchyards, the deceased must have been resident in the parish, or have died there or have been or the Church Electoral Roll there or be in possession of a faculty .
The deceased may be buried or have their cremated remains interred in an existing family grave where there is space if the family concerned agrees.
Ross Churchyard is now closed for burials except where there is unused space in a double grave.
Arranging a Funeral
Choose a funeral director who will explain the choices open to you and their cost.
The funeral director negotiates with you and the Team Administrator when and where the funeral is to take place.
Link to the National Association of Funeral Directors
The priest or Licensed Reader taking the service will have been given early details of the funeral supplied by the funeral director to the Team Office.
Visit by Priest or Licensed Reader:
The Priest or Licensed Reader taking the service will telephone you to arrange a convenient time and place to discuss further details of the service.
You may already have ideas about music, hymns, readings and who might say a few words about the deceased at the service. If you don't have many or any ideas DON'T WORRY!
The person who comes to see you will have some suggestions from which you may choose. If you choose more than one reading, at least one of the readings must be from the Bible.
It is possible to have a CD track played instead of the organ at a funeral but you will be responsible for providing the funeral director with that CD and give them the necessary instructions.
You will be asked if there is any particular charity you would like to benefit or indeed the parish church from a retiring collection at the service.
Fees
These vary from church to church and form part of the bill you will receive from the funeral director.
To see the details of fees for each of the 14 parishes, click on the parish name below.
If you wish to mark the grave or interment plot with a memorial stone, you arrange this either through a funeral director or directly with a stonemason of your choosing.
All stonemasons are governed by the Diocesan Regulations for headstones and memorial tablets in churchyards of the Hereford Diocese . The regulations applying to this diocese may differ from those elsewhere.
Please note that the Diocesan Regulations do not allow artificial flowers anywhere in churchyards.
The Church Fees which are standard throughout the Church of England will form part of bill you receive from the funeral director or stonemason.
The stonemason is obliged to make formal application to the parish priest of the churchyard concerned with precise details of the proposed memorial, its size, stone and inscription.
